Every Christmas the same argument comes up over the question: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?
The 1988 action thriller is an exemplary example of a classic action thriller, with Bruce Willis’s John McClane taking on German terrorists in a hostage situation.
While Die Hard was a summer blockbuster, the film is set on Christmas Eve and makes multiple references to the festive season throughout the film.
And yet it’s not about Christmas in the way that a film like Elf is, so is it a Christmas movie?
Now YouGov have polled over 5000 UK adults with the question: “Do you think that Die Hard is a Christmas film?”
Just 30% voted Yes, while 52% voted No and 18% said they don’t know.
This followed an earlier YouGov poll which asked: “Do you consider a movie that takes place at Christmas time, but is not about Christmas itself, to be a Christmas movie?”
While 50% voted No in that one, even asking specifically about Die Hard in a follow-up poll wasn’t enough to see the film officially stamped as a Christmas movie.
Nevertheless, we still think it absolutely is in our seven reasons the Yippee-Ki-Yay classic is the most festive.
Earlier this year it was confirmed that Bruce Willis will return for Die Hard 6.
Titled Die Hard: Year One, the part-prequel, part-sequel will see flashbacks to a younger John McClane as an LAPD cop.
