The development team confirmed the news that the Overwatch Winter Wonderland would be back this year, via a new teaser on Twitter.

It shows Mei wrapped up for the cold, along with the confirmation that the Overwatch Christmas event would return on December 12.

Game Director Jeff Kaplan also posted more information on YouTube, confirming that new Overwatch skins will be released in loot boxes.

A new Hanzo skin was confirmed, as well as new outfits for Junkrat and Roadhog being launched next week.

The Black Forest arena map is getting a seasonal pass this year, joining the returning King’s Row and Hanamura.

As with previous events, it’s expected that Winter Loot Boxes will be earned or purchased, and each will contain at least one item from the Winter Wonderland collection.

This includes profile icons, sprays, victory poses, emotes, highlight intros and skins.

And while the contents of each seasonal Loot Box will be random, players will be able to unlock a variety of these customisation options in the Hero Gallery throughout the event’s duration.

Mei’s Snowball Offensive will also be returning, although it will be moving to a new map and could overshadowed by another new mode.

The Black Forest will now be the location of choice for the 6v6, single elimination affair in which players fire snowballs at each other.

While it only takes one hit to eliminate an enemy, missing a shot leaves players vulnerable, as players search for the nearest snow pile to reload.

Mei is also getting a new mode called Yeti hunt, which will see five Meis take on a new boss fight.

The boss will be Winston, who will actually be controlled by another players and will not be AI controlled.

Winston will be running around the map looking for meat to unlock his primal rage, if this happens the Mei team then need to run away to avoid being mowed down.

The returning Winter Wonderland will be launching on December 12 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Blizzard will be hoping to avoid the skins problem they had last year, where some fans vented their disappointment as what was being offered.

Mei’s new festive get-up proved lacklustre for many, who have pointed out that it is very similar to her other outfits.

Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has responded to the criticism leveled out some of the new designs, telling fans they had got things a little wrong.

Writing on the Overwatch forums, Kaplan explained: Sorry you are disappointed with Mei’s winter skin.

“We don’t have a specific rule for what makes something Legendary or Epic. We just sort of make a gut call based off of what we think is cool.

“Coolness is very subjective, and based off of the community reaction it seems like our gauge was off on this one.

“Our reasoning for it being Legendary was that we completely redid the visual effects for Cryo-Freeze (we turned the ice block into a snowman).”
