Mild spoilers for The Last Jedi ahead.
Towards the end of Episode 8 in the Star Wars saga, Rey and Poe (Oscar Isaac) met for the first time – and some discussion has ensued as to whether or not their introduction foreshadowed a relationship in Episode 9.
Speaking at a junket in China, as shared on Tumblr by Sleemo, Ridley said: “It’s wonderful to have relationships that are not romantic.
“I don’t think you always need a romantic relationship and friend relationships can be romantic in their gestures and intimacy.”
She added: “So hopefully if Poe and Rey get to have scenes together, there will be intimacy – but it doesn’t have to be romantic love.”
Episode 9 will be released in 2019 and will have JJ Abrams back at the wheel, after he previously found huge record-breaking success with 2015’s The Force Awakens.
Colin Trevorrow had initially been tapped to make the film, but parted ways from the project amid rumours of a poor relationship with Lucasfilm bosses.
Rian Johnson is the man who helmed Episode 8: The Last Jedi, which continues to perform strongly at the box office globally.
Rey isn’t the only character who’s been linked to Poe: several fans have also been rooting for Finn (John Boyega) and the character to launch the franchise’s first clearly same-sex relationship.
The characters had generally different story arcs in Episode 8 but ended Episode 9 in each-other’s company.
