Conspiracy theorists claim to spot a cannonball on Mars

From alien hands to Donald Trump‘s face, conspiracy theorists claim to have spotted a range of weird and wonderful objects on Mars.

Now, alien hunters believe they have spotted a metal cannonball on the surface of the red planet in an image taken by Nasa‘s Curiosity Rover.

Conspiracy theorists claim the object is evidence of a past war on Mars – although it is likely to simply be a rock.

CONSPIRACY, NARCISSISM AND SELF-ESTEEM

Over the course of three online-based studies, researchers at the University of Kent showed strong links between the belief in conspiracy theories and these psychological traits.

The results showed that those people who rated highly on the narcissism scale and who had low self-esteem were more likely to be conspiracy believers.

However, while low self-esteem, narcissism and belief in conspiracies are strongly linked, it is not clear that one – or a combination – causes the other.

But it hints at an interesting new angle to the world of conspiracy and those who reinforce belief.

A video posted on YouTube by channel WhatsUpInTheSky37 shows an image taken by Nasa’s Curiosity Rover of Mars’ surface.

In the video, the image has been colour enhanced to make the ‘ball’ look grey against the red rocks.

Commenting on the video, Scott C. Waring, who runs the site UFO Sightings Daily, said: ‘This metal ball is perfectly formed and about the size of a softball here on Earth.

‘Guess what? That also matches the size of a cannon ball.’

Mr Waring suggests that the object is ‘100 per cent evidence of a war on Mars.’

He added: ‘This projectile is sitting on the surface above all the wrecked stone structures around it.

‘Fragments of a once civilisation is sitting scattered in tiny pieces around this cannon ball.’

Pictured is the original image taken by Nasa’s Curiosity Rover, with the round object seen in the top left corner

Mr Waring believes that the balls were launched at Mars in an attempt to destroy the planet’s atmosphere.

He said: ‘I do believe these balls and millions of others were deliberately shot at Mars from space all at once to destroy their atmosphere, burn it away.

‘What I mean is a large enough man made meteor shower could strip Mars of its atmosphere and thus, destroy all or most life on the planet surface.’

But while Mr Waring believes the structure is a cannonball, not everyone is so convinced.

Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual, told MailOnline: ‘It looks strikingly artificial but even on Earth large spherical rock formations have been created by natural forces.

‘As an example, on Koekohe Beach, New Zealand, you can find the Moeraki Boulders. They were formed from a small central core that accumulated materials over time, so this Martian sphere could be something formed in its ancient past.

‘Or in other words, without being able to investigate it properly its a load of balls to think it is artificial or the result of alien activity.’
