Arsenal news: Danny Welbeck slammed for ‘desperate’ moment vs BATE | Football | Sport

That is the view of BT Sport pundit and former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas.

Walcott captained Arsenal tonight and doubled their lead with a close-range effort on 37 minutes.

The winger made a great run but Welbeck failed to spot him and instead chose to take on the defender himself.

The ball bobbled off the BATE man into the path of Walcott.

And Jenas reckons Welbeck took the wrong decision but admits it was probably because he was desperate to score himself.

“There’s two things I really like about this goal,” Jenas said.

“First (Olivier) Giroud, tracking back, winning the ball. And then the other thing is Theo Walcott finding the space to run into, he does that very well.

“How Welbeck didn’t see him in the first place I do not know.

“He’s massively helped by the defender because as a player when you make those runs, you expect to be found by quality players. Welbeck is a quality player, he’s got very lucky.

“He’s got very lucky there and you can see Theo say ‘listen, you need to be passing me the ball’.

“It definitely is (because he was desperate to score) but at the same time when you’ve got that quality, you show it with passes and assists as well as scoring goals.

“So yeah, he should have passed it.”
